What Type of CDL License Do You Need?

To operate a commercial motor vehicle, drivers must possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), which requires more specialized skills and knowledge compared to driving a standard car or smaller vehicle.

A Class A CDL is necessary for any combination of vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, including towing a vehicle weighing 10,000 pounds or more. This license is primarily required for long-haul tractor-trailer operations.

For single vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, such as buses, tow trucks, dump trucks, garbage trucks, and delivery vehicles, a Class B CDL is required.
